THE Police Ombudsman is investigating an incident in which a 25-year-old man was killed when a stolen car crashed in Hannahstown on Thursday morning after a police car had been rammed.

The man
who died was Antony Wilson, who is originally from Poleglass. He had a number of convictions for car crime.

He was the passenger in blue Honda Civic which crashed on the Glenside Road shortly before 1.50am.

Police said officers spotted two cars being driven suspiciously on the Rock Road about five minutes before. One of the cars then rammed the police vehicle and the two cars raced away from the scene.

A second police vehicle discovered the car crashed into the side of the Glenside Road with the victim inside. Another 25 year old man was arrested.

The Glenside Road was closed from the Glen Road to the Springfield Road and the Rock Road was also closed from the Budore Road in Hannahstown Road to Leathemstown Road for some time.

The other vehicle, a maroon Toyota Corina, was found burnt out in the Colinbrook area.

Police said it was not a police chase.

Councillor Paul Butler expressed his sympathies to the man's family and said he hoped lessons could be learned from the incident.

And Councillor Matthew McDermott said it was clear there are people who may have information on what caused the crash. He appealed for them to go to the police as soon as possible.

Police in Lisburn are appealing for witnesses to the movements of the cars prior to the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers on 0845-6008000 or ring the Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.
