LAGAN Valley MLA Jonathan Craig has welcomed the news there could be as many as five improvement schemes on the Hillhall Road.

Mr Craig had tabled a number of questions to the Minister for Regional Dev
elopment Conor Murphy asking asking what steps the Roads Service is taking to reduce tailbacks on the road between Lisburn and Purdysburn and to investigate the causes of flooding during heavy rain, which often results in the closure of the road and subsequent long delays.

Mr Craig was told a recent review had identified areas for improvement.

"These schemes include realigning the bend between 218 and 224 Hillhall Road, and they will be considered for inclusion in Roads Services' minor works programme for the Lisburn area" he said.

The Department said the Hillhall Road is being used as a diversionary route during the ongoing works on the M1 motorway and the Westlink.

With the underpass at Broadway due to open tthis summer, and full completion of the Westlink works by spring 2009, they believed traffic volumes on the Hillhall Road are expected to reduce.

However, Roads Service did find in their recent route study the potential for five improvement schemes.

"These would enhance road safety and traffic progression and are considered to provide value for money. The proposed scheme will now be considered for inclusion in Roads Service Minor works programme.

However, it should be noted that any scheme proposed would be subject to the availability of necessary lands and finance" Mr Craig was told.

The MLA said: "This is good news and I will keep pressure on the Roads Service to deliver on these proposed schemes. There have been too many accidents on this very busy route and therefore, it is essential to have the work carried out before there are any more serious injuries or even loss of life."
