Season ends for Castledawson anglers
Yet for the hatchery committee, their work is only beginning.
A day after the season ended, rods were replaced by an electro fisher in order to go along the river to find dollaghan and salmon for the hatchery.

Hide AdConditions on this occasion were far from ideal but a determined bunch did find a few dollaghan which are ready for “stripping” at any time.
The fish are captured in the river and transported unharmed via a specially designed trailer to the hatchery which is high in the hills above Draperstown.
Here, the fish will have their eggs “stripped” and fertilised before being returned to the river.
The eggs are checked each night to assure the maximum amount hatch into young fry. These are then planted out into the head waters of Moyola and its tributaries to grow for a couple of years before starting their journey to adulthood.

If you feel you could help, contact Philip Maguire,Mervyn Finlay or Seamus Donnelly.
A big thanks is offered to those anglers who have provided excellent steps at the “Factory Hole” in Castledawson.
This work was carried out voluntary, while it is stressed that the club will endeavour to provide materials and tools for anyone who wishes to carry out such schemes.Joey and Kenny took on this job on their own and carried it through to a successful conclusion. Gratitude goes to them.
