Glebe denied by freak goal

There was noone more disappointed with Glebe Rangers result on Saturday than Manager Jason Wilmont.

A cruel own goal and a sure fire penalty appeal turned down saw the men from Ballymoney lose to PSNI at the Riada Stadium.

What made the loss harder to take for boss Wilmont was the fact his side played some good football, putting in what could arguably be described as their best performance of the season so far.

“We lost because of a freak goal,” said the Glebe boss. “We were very good on Saturday, in fact we have been very, very good the last few weeks but just haven’t seem to have got the rub of the green.

“We drew against Dollingstown and Coagh United and we should have won both of them.

“Against the PSNI we played well, the second half in particular was as good as we have played since I took over and once again ricky Dunlop scored for us.

“It was a really good performance especially against a team who are going to be up there at the end of the season.

“They scored early on when we gave a bad goal away when we seemed to go to sleep.

“We came back into it and hit the bar twice and had numerous chances. We played them off the park for long spells of the game but a couple of sucker punches at the end denied us getting anything from the game.

“Their second happened when one of their players shoots from 30 yards. I was standing right behind and whenever it left his foot I could see it swerve at the last minute. hit the post, runs across the line and hots Barney on the heel and goes in. There was nothing he could do about it, it was just a freak goal. They had the luck, it hit the post and went in, we hit the bar and get nothing, but that’s the way the game goes at times.

“I thought we had a certain penalty at the end and that could have made all the difference to us.
