Small flotilla recently tracing the Flight of the Earls
THE Sentinel recently filmed this small flotilla of sailing boats making its way along the eastern coast of Fanad towards the mouth of the aptly named Lough Swilly - the lake of shadows.
The argosy has just passed Rathmullan from whence ‘The Great O’Neill,’ Hugh, of Tyrone and his co-conspirator Red Hugh O’Donnell of Tyrconnel set sail for Europe 406 years ago today (Septemebr 14).
‘The Flight of the Earls’ in 1607 would have seen the fugitive chieftains follow the same course past Glenvar as the little boats pictured here.
