New traffic calming scheme for Low Road

A new traffic calming scheme on the Low Road and Grand Street could finally be on the cards as early as next year.

Transport NI informed Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson that they are currently preparing a preliminary design.

In a letter to Mr Donaldson, TransportNI described the area as one that “retains a high position on our prioritised list for the provision of further traffic calming measures”.

Transport NI have stated that they hope to progress this scheme in the near future, possibly during the forthcoming financial year in 2016/17. 

It will be welcome news to the residents of the area who have complained bitterly of the high volume of traffic on the Low Road over the years.  It is often used as a short cut to avoid traffic on Queensway and many have complained of the number of challenges it presents for pedestrians and for children walking to school.

Commenting on this news, Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson said, “I have received numerous requests from local residents in recent years for the provision of a traffic calming scheme on the Low Road and Grand Street.
